In
the 1990s, the Government of Alberta foresaw the increased importance
that science and technology would play in the future prosperity
of the province. While Alberta was home to some of the world's leading
researchers, the majority of those researchers were working independently.
In order to increase efficiency, the Government of Alberta created the Alberta Science and Research Authority (ASRA) in 1994 with the strategic
vision of coordinating all research and development throughout the
province, to increase prosperity and enhance the well-being of Albertans.
This
vision is now a reality and ASRA advise government
on science, engineering and technology issues that affect
resources or industry in Alberta, and on coordination of government research
and development.
ASRA advises the Government of Alberta on strategic directions and priorities for science, research, technology and innovation within the following areas of focus:
