Through
AERI, the Alberta government and ASRA are well positioned to participate
with the private sector, universities and the federal government,
advancing market-driven energy alternatives and building on the
much needed research and development capability focused on Alberta's
resources.
AERI
continues to work in a number of industry/government/academia joint
programs. These programs are the most effective method of transferring
technology developed with government funds to the industry that
will develop the resources. These programs include:
- Core University Research in Sustainable Energy
- a program with over 25 industry members that supports research initiatives at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. To date, there have been five competitions and $11.1 million in funding has been directed to 82 projects.
- AERI/ARC/Core
Industry (AACI) program - AERI, ARC and the industry
members each contribute approximately $1 million to this program.
ARC conducts research into bitumen and heavy oil in site recovery
techniques.
- National
Center for Upgrading Technology
- works with industry partners to develop upgrading techniques
to allow Alberta to maximize the value of its resources. AERI
contributes approximately $600,000 annually to this program.
- Canadian
Clean Power Coalition - has four government participants
and six industry participants. Short-term goals are to study the
options available for cleaner coal-burning generation of electricity.
Long-term plans are to retrofit an existing coal-burning plant
and to build a greenfields plant, both of which will have emissions
as low as natural gas.
- Zero
Emission Coal Alliance is an international group
with the long-term goal of zero emissions from burning coal. The
initial phases are being developed in the U.S., and AERI will
receive knowledge gained from a large project without incurring
all the costs.
