COLLABORATION BENEFITS ALL - Multimedia Advanced Computational Infrastructure (MACI)
Albertans are the direct beneficiaries of a new collaborative effort - the Multimedia Advanced Computational Infrastructure (MACI), proposed by Dr. Brian Unger at the University of Calgary and Dr. Jonathan Schaeffer at the University of Alberta.

IMPROVING CANCER TREATMENTS - Image-Guided Adaptive Radiotherapy (IGAR)
While radiation remains a proven technique for eradicating and controlling cancer, the side effects make the treatments less than pleasant, if not unacceptable. But now, a grant from the Alberta Science and Research Authority (ASRA) has changed all that.

DE-BUGGING THE WATER
We take it for granted that water from the faucet is clean. Indeed, chemical disinfection is relatively adequate in ridding water of common protozoan parasites. Yet, the incidence of water tainted with bacteria and disease-bearing organisms is rising.

REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
It's a topic that makes the headlines at least once per week in Canada - the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While this country is certainly not the worst culprit in greenhouse gas emissions across the world, it is one of the leaders in attempting to reduce emissions significantly.

SHARING RESOURCES BENEFITS ALL - Canadian National Site Licensing Project (Alberta component)
Once upon a time, the scholarly world shared the results of their work in various ways, such as through societies. These societies published journals, which were reasonably priced and readily available.

WORLD-CLASS FACILITY DRAWS RESEARCHERS FROM AFAR - National High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Centre (NANUC)
NANUC, a specially built facility at the University of Alberta, has extended the boundaries of traditional science.

MAPPING THE FUTURE - Development of a Multi-Sensor Laboratory for Real-Time Positioning
Multi-sensor systems have been widely used for a broad range of applications, including airborne remote sensing and geophysical prospecting, geospatial information systems (GIS), outdoor and indoor navigation and guidance, and robotics, to name but a few. Now, a new multi-sensor lab for real-time positioning at the University of Calgary will enable teams of faculty members and their students to work together with industry and other partners to conduct multi-disciplinary research and develop innovative integrated geomatics products and processes, a capability not in existence at present.

FOCUSING ON THE BRAIN - Neuroscience Building
The human brain remains the most misunderstood component of the human body today. It is just that mystery, however, that intrigues scientists the world over.
