Dr. Lorne Tyrrell is Professor and CIHR/GSK Chair in Virology Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Alberta. Dr. Tyrrell established the Glaxo Heritage Research Institute at the University of Alberta. Research at this Institute has led to the worldwide licensing of a new antiviral agent for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Dr. Tyrrell recently completed 10 years as Dean of Medicine at the University of Alberta. In 2000, he received the Alberta Order of Excellence from the Province of Alberta. Two years later he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2005, he won the EnCana Principal Award of the Manning Foundation for Innovation. Dr. Tyrell completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry and his MD at the University of Alberta. He then completed his Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Queen's University. After that he returned to Alberta to complete training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Tyrrell also trained at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Swede - a postdoctoral experience, which led to a research interest in the field of virology that continues today.
